The history of the Rose Bowl began as the “Tournament East-West football game” in 1902 with Stanford playing the University of Michigan. After a score of 49-0 (Michigan), the officials wondered if chariot races, ostrich races and other events would be better than football. However, football returned with a vengeance in 1916, with The State College of Washington vs. Brown University in the first annual Rose Bowl game.
